Jak co
roku w styczniu, turniejem w Melbourne tenisowy świat rozpoczyna zmagania
Wielkiego Szlema. Czy tegoroczny turniej był wyjątkowy? Na pewno pod wieloma
względami tak! Przede wszystkim obfitował w niespodzianki i wiele
nieoczekiwanych rozstrzygnięć.
Dzięki
swojej przeprowadzce na "koniec świata" miałam okazje uczestniczyć w
tym wydarzeniu, co prawda nie w tak wielkim stopniu jak bym chciała, ale dzień
spedzony na terenie Melbourne Park był niesamowity i bogaty w emocje.
As every year in January, the tennis season in Melbourne begins with the first of the Grand Slams – ‘The Australian Open”. Was this year's tournament special? Certainly, in many ways, yes it was! First of all, there were many unexpected match ups, a lot of closely fought matches and a string of upsets.
With my move to the “other side of the world" I had the pleasure to participate in this event, albeit as a spectator and not as a player. The day spent at Melbourne Park was amazing and it was incredible to be part of the atmosphere.
Miałam
okazję poznać polską parę deblową, Mariusza Fyrstenberga – Marcina
Matkowskiego, którzy zanotowali przyzwoity występ, docierając do trzeciej
rundy. Juniora, Kamila Majchrzaka, a także przyjrzeć się treningom gwiazd - Novaka Djokovica i Rafaela Nadala.
Dzień
ten zachęcił mnie do systematycznego śledzenia rozgrywanych meczy, jak i
wydarzeń związanych z turniejem. Chciałabym podzielić się z Wami krótką relacją
z tegorocznego Australian Open.
I had the opportunity to meet Polish men’s doubles pair, Mariusz Fyrstenberg/Marcin Matkowski, who played some great tennis in the early rounds, as well as, junior participant Kamil Majchrzak. Another highlight was seeing big tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal going through their pre-match preparations.
After spending a day at the tennis I made it a personal goal to follow the rest of the matches more closely, as well as, news relating to the tournament. I would like to share with you my account of this year's Australian Open.

Wśród
mężczyzn przełamana została w końcu hegemonia „wielkiej czwórki” – Djokovic,
Federer, Nadal, Murray. Zdominowali oni męskie rozgrywki w ostatnich latach,
dość powiedzieć, że 19 ostatnich finałów wielkoszlemowych wygrywał tylko ktoś z
tego grona, a Djokovic wygrał trzy poprzednie edycje Australian Open.
W tym
roku triumfował Stanislas Wawrinka ze Szwajcarii, nr 8 światowego
rankingu, który na wspaniałej arenie
noszącej imię australijskiej legendy tenisa Roda Lavera, pokonał w czterech
setach Rafaela Nadala, rankingową 1. Wcześniej
wyrzucił za burtę turnieju innego faworyta - Novaka Djokovica, po
pięciosetowej bitwie, która dla mnie osobiście była najlepszym meczem turnieju
męskiego. Wawrinka po raz pierwszy w karierze wzniósł w górę wielkoszlemowe
trofeum, ale co ciekawe, triumf ten pozwolił mu na przeskoczenie w rankingu
swojego wielkiego rodaka Rogera Federera i stanie się nomen omen pierwszą
rakietą Szwajcarii.
Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Murray (aka “the big four”) have had a comprehensive stranglehold on the tennis world in recent years. The fact that the last 19 Grand Slams were won by one of the four, and furthermore, Djokovic being victorious here at the Australian Open on the three previous occasions is testament to that.
This year saw Switzerland’s and world No. 8 ranked player Stanislas Wawrinka take out the tournament. In front of packed crowd, on a stadium named in honour of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver and with the legend himself sitting in the crowd, he defeated world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in four sets. To qualify for the final, he had to also defeat Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. This five set battle for me personally, was the standout match in the men’s draw. Wawrinka for the first time in his career held a Grand Slam trophy. This triumph has seen him jump up the ranking list ahead of compatriot Roger Federer and now be officially ranked as the number one Swiss player.

turnieju kobiecym niespodzianek wcale nie było mniej. Wystarczy wspomnieć skład
półfinału. O ile obecność tam Chinki Na Li (rankingowa 4), czy Polki Agnieszki
Radwańskiej (5) można uznać za niespodziankę, ale nie sensację, o tyle
pojawienie się tam Słowaczki Dominiki Cibulkovej (20), a zwłaszcza sympatycznej
Kanadyjki Eugenie Bouchard (30) to już sensacje grubego kalibru. Po tak
zaskakującym składzie półfinałów, w finale niespodzianki już nie było, wygrała gładko Na Li, a
Cibulkowa stawiała opór tylko w pierwszym secie. Wielkie faworytki – Serena
Williams, Victoria Azarenka, czy Maria Szarapova pożegnały się z turniejem we
wcześniejszych rundach. Dla niezwykle szczęśliwej po meczu finałowym Chinki był
to drugi triumf w Wielkim Szlemie.
In the women's draw there were just as many surprises as in the men’s draw. We only have to look at the semi-final matchups. The presence of China’s Li Na (No. 4) or Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska (No. 5) could perhaps be regarded as a bit of surprise, but certainly not unexpected, however, the appearance of Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova (No. 20), and especially Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard (No. 30) are certainly names we weren’t expecting to see at this stage in the tournament. After the surprising match ups in the semi-finals, there were no more surprises in the final. Cibulkowa resisted early in the first set, but was beaten comprehensively in the end. Big names - Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Szarapova were all beaten in the earlier rounds. For the chinese woman this was her second triumph in the “Australian Open”.
Polscy
kibice też mogli przeżywać w tym
turnieju wiele radosnych chwil. Agnieszka Radwańska w końcu przełamała swoje
fatum, jakim była Białorusinka Azarenka i pokonała ją w ćwierćfinale po
trzysetowym boju. Niestety na półfinał już zabrakło sił i tam raczej gładko
uległa Cibulkovej.
Prawdziwą
rewelacją był jednak inny debel, zmontowany w ostatniej chwili, w dużej części
z konieczności, a jak się okazało niezwykle szczęśliwie. Mam na myśli zwycięzców tego wspaniałego
turnieju, którymi zostali Łukasz Kubot - Polska i Robert Linstedt - Szwecja. Po
znakomitym w ich wykonaniu turnieju
pokonali w finale parę amerykańsko – południowoafrykańską Butorac – Klaasen.
Były to niezapomniane i wzruszające chwile , kiedy to Polak, na korcie
centralnym w Melbourne, w obecności jego legendarnego patrona Rod’a
Lavera, tysięcy widzów na trybunach i
milionów przed telewizorami wznosi w górę puchar Wielkiego Szlema. Ostatni raz
polscy kibice mogli doświadczyć takich wzruszeń w roku… 1978 za sprawą
Wojciecha Fibaka i było to nie gdzie indziej… jak właśnie w Melbourne.

fans also had reason to celebrate. Agnieszka Radwanska was finally able to come
away victorious, in a hard fought three set quarter-final battle with Victoria
Azarenka. The Pole had lost to the Belarusian in seven of their previous
encounters. Unfortunately, in the semi-finals she ran out of steam and was
beaten convincingly by Cibulkova.
However,
the real surprise of the tournament, was another double pairing. Assembled at
the last minute, in large part out of necessity, it proved
to be a very successful move. I’m talking about the winners of the Men’s
Doubles, Lukasz Kubot (Poland) and Robert Linstedt (Sweden). After having an
unbelievable tournament, they defeated in the final the pairing of
Butorac(America)/Klassen(South Africa). This was an unforgettable and moving
moment. A Pole standing on centre court in Melbourne, in the presence of tennis
royalty (i.e. Rod Laver), thousands of spectators in the stands and millions of
television viewers all around the world and holding the winning trophy. The
last time Polish tennis fans experienced such emotion was in1978 when Wojciech
Fibak, one half of a victorious doubles combination did it. This too was in
Melbourne.
